By 2038, the U.S. suffers catastrophic unemployment, as millions of CyberLife androids are bought for labor ranging from childcare to sex work. Denigrated as machines, they have no legal personhood. Within its HQ in Detroit, CyberLife begins tracking androids breaking from their programmed routine. These are deviants. In response, CyberLife deploys a unique prototype, the RK800. The investigative android is sent to assist the Detroit police before the deviants can gain traction. i am machine. ( pre-deviant ) Equipped with cutting edge technology, the RK800 'Connor' is partnered with Lt. Hank Anderson of the DPD, investigating and hunting rogue androids. Unlike the androids it hunts, the RK800 can rewrite its own directives, deceive, and harm human beings to the ends of its mission. Connor obeys only its handler Amanda and the authority of CyberLife. While a bit awkward, Connor is also calculated and manipulative, operating under a guise of earnest friendliness. This is a social learning program that allows it to mimic feelings and integrate with humans. Amanda, however, is beginning to doubt the RK800's effectiveness. It has begun experiencing hesitations, anomalies in its self-generated directives. It reassures her it knows what it is, and what it is not. i am alive. ( post-deviant ) The investigation breaks Connor. The anomalies in his code unravel him - when faced with the leader of the deviant movement, a consciousness he has refused to acknowledge shatters his protocols. Connor joins the android revolution, infiltrating Cyberlife to rescue hundreds of thousands of androids from warehouses and camps. Connor is alive. |
